Welcome to RB Figs. I live in Maryland and grow figs, mostly in pots. They go into my garage during the winter to have a nice long nap. I sell bare-root trees throughout spring/summer/fall and cuttings in the fall.
CUTTINGS:
UPDATE: Check the BLOG section. I updated my list of varieties May 2016
I will be taking cuttings around December 1st. I will charge $8 per variety and will ship 2 or 3 cuttings of each. Each cutting will be approximately 6 to 8 inches long. In order for me to plan appropriately, please send me your cutting requests between November 1st and November 15th. Between November 15th and December 1st I will consolidate the requests and check to see what's available. Then I’ll get back to you with a list of which requested varieties are available and a total cost, including shipping and handling cost. If all is well, you can send me a paypal or a check and I’ll send it out in early December. Last year I was able to fulfill most orders but there are a few varieties where scion material is limited compared to demand.
In order to keep this front page neat, I will post my list of available cuttings on the Blog section of this website.
SHIPPING INFO:
Most orders have shipping costs between $6 and $13 per order. I only ship within the U.S. and use USPS priority mail. I don't scrub or treat the cutting in any way, I just clip it, let it air dry for a day or two, then send it out.
DISCLOSURES:
I believe that most if not all of my
fig trees were at one point infected with Fig Mosaic Virus (FMV). I don't
think it has any significant impact on the trees, but if this is a problem for
you, don't order. I don't accept credit cards or C.O.D. I accept Paypal
or checks.
PLANTS:
I prefer to ship my trees partial bare-root. This can be done in the fall or summer. In the fall just after dormancy is probably the best time, but I have had success doing it during summer as well. If done during the summer, the tree will likely lose most of its leaves and grow a new set. This will stress the plant, but it will still probably survive. I will ship bare-root plants in USPS Priority Mail 36 inch triangular tubes. This means I take it out of its pot, shake off a bunch of the potting mix, but not all, trim off any circling roots, put it in a plastic bag, then mush it into the mailer tube. If it is too tall or wide to fit, I will trim accordingly. If it is a very large tree, I might decide to do it differently.
Here are my approximate prices, not including shipping costs. $15 – 1 gallon, $25 – 2 gallon, $35 – 3 gallon, $50 - 5 gallon. If I can fit the tree into one of those mailer tubes, the shipping will probably be between $6 and $15. If they are small, I can often fit two to a tube. If it's a larger tree and doesn't fit, it will be more.
